2 DAY COURSES in 2008
Painting In A Country Garden
All ‘Watercolour School’ courses this year will be based in the Watershed gardens.
After a short period of instruction in the studio on the first day we will venture out into the lush flowers and foliage of the gardens to make sketches in the sketchpads provided. On the second day we will explore the various methods of enlarging your sketches onto watercolour paper. The next step will be to practice some of the ‘positive and negative’ shapes found in leaves before embarking upon your own personal composition.
Spring
Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th May
As the earth begins to warm and the balmy air wafts across the meadows, so irises and tulips begin to fill the gardens. These will be our subjects on the first day, learning which green mixtures are best suited to which types of foliage.
On the second day we will begin to develop paintings which capture the freshness of a spring day in a country garden.
Summer
Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd June
As the year moves on, so geraniums are planted into terracotta pots and the lushness of the foliage takes on a different tone of green, requiring warmer yellows in the mix. Shadows take on a violet tint and reds and oranges fill the garden.
In the studio we will begin to paint compositions which glow with the heat of summer
Autumn
Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th October
On the first day we will look at the ochres, oranges and siennas that this vibrant season yields, making sketches of grape vines, gourds, Chinese lanterns and autumn leaves.
On the second day we will develop a full-scale composition from the sketches that is redolent of the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
In the event of bad weather we will still be able to bring the subjects into the studio and carry on in comfort.
